LANSING — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement on the Michigan Senate unanimously passing legislation today in support of Licensed Professional Counselors in Michigan.

“The value of licensed, professional counselors in our state cannot be understated, especially when so many people are struggling to deal with the stress and anxiety that comes with daily life. I am proud of their work not only for their clients, but also for their rights as medical professionals.

“We need more licensed professionals who are willing to be advocates for everyone, of all ages. I hope the passage of this legislation today serves as a catalyst for more of these types of conversations, and I stand ready to continue the important work of improving access to mental health services in our state.”

House Bill 4325 now heads to the governor’s desk for her signature.

Sen. Santana is also the lead sponsor on Senate Bill 41, which would provide teachers training to help them identify student mental health issues.
