LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) issued the following statement today after learning of the decision from a private legal firm that the Michigan State Capitol Commission does have the authority to ban guns from the state Capitol Building:
“People should not have to go to work wearing a bulletproof vest unless their job requires one — and ours as legislators in the state Capitol has never required it. Staff and visitors, young and old, who visit the people’s building should never have to worry about their safety and whether someone is carrying a gun, openly or concealed. There should be no accommodations made for agitators who would rather see our society divided instead of united. Period.
“After multiple punts and stalling tactics, I am once again urging the Commission members to see beyond partisan politics, honor the people chosen to serve the state of Michigan, and ban the carrying of all firearms at the Michigan State Capitol Building. The law says there is a way, and I look forward to seeing if they do the right thing.”
