DETROIT, Mich. — Today, the Wayne County delegation of senators — Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit), Sen. Adam Hollier (D-Detroit), Sen. Marshall Bullock (D-Detroit), Sen. Betty Jean Alexander (D-Detroit), Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) and Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) — have issued the following statement regarding the killing of Wayne County Deputy Sheriff Corporal Bryant Searcy by an inmate after he was attacked at a Detroit jail last night:

“The loss of one of Wayne County’s finest is a tragedy not only for the family of Corporal Searcy, but for our communities who were safer because of his service. Our deepest and most heartfelt prayers go out to the Searcy family during this incredibly difficult time. We can only imagine the devastating pain felt by his family, friends, and the entire Wayne County Sheriff Department family, and we stand ready to help however possible.

“This is also a moment for everyone to reflect on the important and dangerous work we ask our law enforcement officers and their families to take on every day. Public safety is a real and dangerous calling, and this tragedy should serve as a reminder that we need to refocus our efforts on creating safe communities for all of us — and those who protect them.”
