If you or a senior you know are struggling to pay for food, Meals on Wheels can help.<br><br>This program provides five nutritious meals per week to homebound, older adults. Be sure to check out their Senior Resource Directory \u2014 it has quite a bit of good information!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background\" style=\"color:#ffffff;background-color:#22b4bf;font-size:22px\">Know Your Rights: Protect Against Elder Abuse and Fraud<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Michigan, more than 73,000 older adults have been victims of abuse \u2014 and many more are targets. Seniors are vulnerable to abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and much of it is unreported or underreported. To combat this, our Attorney General has created the Elder Abuse Task Force, which has been tasked with implementing various initiatives and creating a more streamlined reporting process that can help reduce the risk of elder abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elder Abuse: SEE IT, DOCUMENT IT, REPORT IT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#22b4bf\">If you or someone you know might be a victim of elder abuse, the attorney general&#8217;s office recommends that you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 54%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take photographs and written notes on what you observed, when you observed it, and who was present, along with any further helpful information;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immediately report incidents to the nursing home or health care facility administrator, if applicable; and,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report the abuse to the <strong>Office of the Attorney General <\/strong>at <strong>(800) 242-2873 <\/strong>and to the <strong>Michigan Department of Health &amp; Human Services Adult Protective Services <\/strong>at <strong>(855) 444-3911<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/santana\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2021\/02\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5565 size-full\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We need to ensure that our vulnerable adults are receiving the care and protection they deserve.<\/p>\n<cite>-Sen. Santana<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#22b4bf;font-size:22px\">The Cost of Prescription Drugs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many people who need prescription drugs, the costs can be extreme, leaving patients struggling to make difficult decisions between basic life expenses based on their budget. No one should have to ration insulin or choose which refills to get when they need them. While many of the most impactful legislative changes on controlling the cost of prescription drugs must be addressed at the federal level, as a state we need to develop creative solutions. I am committed to finding ways we can address this growing issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#22b4bf\">Here is some information that you may find useful as you head to the pharmacy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Know your rights: <\/strong>Michigan law requires pharmacies to share drug prices with consumers.<br><br><strong>\u2022 Compare prices: <\/strong>The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services maintains <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/michigandrugprices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MichiganDrugPrices.com<\/a><\/strong>, which allows you to compare and save money without ever stepping foot in a pharmacy.<br><br><strong>\u2022 Prescription discount cards: <\/strong>The MiRx (My Prescription) Card is a prescription drug discount program for Michigan residents who do not have prescription drug coverage. The MiRx Card program is free; there is no cost for the card or to enroll in the program. MiRx cardholders can take their prescription and their MiRx card to their local participating pharmacy, where the pharmacist will fill the prescription and charge the MiRx discounted price. The discount covers any medicine the pharmacist stocks and that your doctor prescribes, except for over-the-counter drugs. For more information, please visit <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mihealth.org\/MiRx\/\" target=\"_blank\">MIHealth.org\/MiRx<\/a><\/strong>.<br><br>Pharmacies often also offer free discount cards to consumers who do not have insurance or who have very high co-pays. While these discount cards can offer significant savings, it is important to be aware that companies will sometimes use these cards as a scam to require you to pay more in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>No one should have to ration insulin or choose which refills to get when they need them.<\/p>\n<cite>-Sen. Santana<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size\" style=\"color:#22b4bf\">Protect Yourself from Medicare Scams<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) are warning seniors to protect themselves and their personal information from potential scams and high-pressure sales tactics.<br><br>Fraudsters posing as Medicare \u201crepresentatives\u201d are calling unsuspecting consumers about their Medicare coverage and asking for Medicare ID numbers or other personal information, such as a Social Security Number or date of birth. Once the scammers have this information, they can use it to make unauthorized changes to your Medicare plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#22b4bf\">DIFS and MDHHS have some important tips for protecting yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Never give your Medicare number or other personal information to an unknown caller. <\/strong>You are always able to get information on Medicare plans without providing an ID number. The only time the Medicare ID number is required is when you are actually enrolling in a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Do not give out your personal information if someone<br>calls or visits your home and says they\u2019re from Medicare. <\/strong>The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will never call or send someone to your home to ask for personal information or check your Medicare number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Don\u2019t trust caller ID. <\/strong>Scammers use technology to make it look like they are calling from a legitimate business or government agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Ignore anyone who calls saying you must join their prescription drug plan, or you will lose your Medicare coverage. <\/strong>While it is true that there may be a penalty if you delay enrolling in the Medicare prescription drug plan (also known as Part D), that coverage is voluntary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Don\u2019t trust mailers that appear to be government communications but are advertisements for private companies. <\/strong>These mailers will sometimes have a disclaimer, but it is buried in small print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have questions or concerns about your Medicare coverage, DIFS and MDHHS urge you to contact Medicare directly at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medicare.gov<\/a> <\/strong>or by calling <strong>800-633-4227<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insurance fraud, including Medicare fraud, results in higher health care costs for participants and taxpayers alike. That is why it\u2019s so important to know how to protect your Medicare card and number. If you or a loved one has experienced this type of scam or high- pressure tactic, contact DIFS at <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/difs\/0,5269,7-303-12902_12907---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan.gov\/DIFSComplaints<\/a> <\/strong>or call <strong>877-999-6442 <\/strong>to file a complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background\" style=\"color:#ffffff;background-color:#22b4bf;font-size:22px\">COVID-19 Information &amp; Resources<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Information and Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our health care professionals and public servants have been hard at work since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, making sure that everyone has access to important information and resources. Do your part to stay safe and stop the spread of this virus by wearing a mask when you go out, staying at least six feet apart from others, avoiding crowded indoor spaces, and washing your hands often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/Coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/Coronavirus<\/a> <\/strong>to find the latest information, a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and testing sites near you or call the <strong>COVID-19 Hotline <\/strong>at <strong>(888) 535-6136<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information specific to Wayne County, contact the <strong>Wayne County Health Department\u2019s COVID-19 Public Information Line <\/strong>at <strong>(734) 287-7870 <\/strong>or visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waynecounty.com\/COVID19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WayneCounty.com\/COVID19<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information specific to Detroit, contact the <strong>City of Detroit Health Department\u2019s COVID-19 Hotline <\/strong>at <strong>(313) 876-4000 <\/strong>or visit <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/detroitmi.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">detroitmi.gov<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Download the MI COVID Alert app<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the state\u2019s continued efforts to slow the increasing spread of COVID-19, the free and voluntary MI COVID Alert app can let you know whether you\u2019ve been recently exposed to COVID-19. The app works in conjunction with traditional contact tracing, mask-wearing, hand washing, and social distancing, but is not a replacement for these precautions or participation in contact tracing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a person tests positive for COVID-19, they receive a randomly generated PIN from the local health department or State of Michigan that allows them to anonymously share their test results on the app. A notification from the app means you were possibly within six feet of the positive person for at least 15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every Michigander is encouraged to download MI COVID Alert, which is available in the Apple and Google app stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Be Kind to Your Mind\u2019 and seek help<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year has been a difficult year for many Michiganders, which is why the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is encouraging people to Be Kind to Your Mind. Confidential counseling is available 24\/7 by calling <strong>888-535-6136 <\/strong>and pressing \u201c8\u201d, or residents can visit <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98178_99557---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan.gov\/StayWell<\/a> <\/strong>for more information and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID Vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Dec. 11, 2020, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced a vaccine distribution plan that follows recommendations set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and established a goal of vaccinating 70% of Michiganders by the end of 2021.
