(Aug. 12, 2025) \u2014 Today, the Senate Committee on Housing and Human Services, chaired by Sen. <b>Jeff Irwin <\/b>(D-Ann Arbor), held a hearing on <span><u><a id=\"OWA5f0798b3-9c8d-cada-a2ed-b60144252461\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW101785949 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0309\" data-linkindex=\"1\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0309\">Senate Bill 309<\/a><\/u><\/span>, legislation championed by Sen. <b>Sylvia Santana <\/b>(D-Detroit) to expand the <span><u><a id=\"OWAe6c0c1b2-92e0-52a3-95e1-86863ebe4062\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW101785949 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/building-blocks\/#:~:text=Curing%20Childhood%20Poverty%20with%20Rx%20Kids%C2%A0\" data-linkindex=\"2\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/building-blocks\/#:~:text=Curing%20Childhood%20Poverty%20with%20Rx%20Kids%C2%A0\">successful Rx Kids program<\/a><\/u><\/span> statewide. The committee heard testimony on the far-reaching benefits of Rx Kids \u2014 from helping families afford basic necessities to improving health, education, and early development \u2014 and emphasized the need to expand the program statewide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaising a child should be one of the most joyful times in a family\u2019s life \u2014 but instead, the reality for far too many families is that parenthood has become a time of great financial hardship,\u201d said Sen. <b>Santana<\/b>, sponsor of Senate Bill 309. \u201cAs a parent of three children myself, I\u2019ve seen firsthand how the cost of diapers, formula, and child care has continued to rise over the years \u2014 which is why I\u2019m working to expand Rx Kids statewide, helping families keep more money in their pockets during pregnancy and their baby\u2019s first year of life. I\u2019ll keep fighting to ensure that every Michigan family has the support they need to raise healthy, happy kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><u><a id=\"OWAe9b632a9-6b64-ff2f-7a55-655d457ab202\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW101785949 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/building-blocks\/#:~:text=Rx%20Kids%20has%20already%20served%20more%20than%201%2C500%20families%20in%20Flint%20and%20provided%20more%20than%20%246.7%20million%20in%20cash%20payments%20to%20support%20Flint%20moms%20and%20babies\" data-linkindex=\"3\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/building-blocks\/#:~:text=Rx%20Kids%20has%20already%20served%20more%20than%201%2C500%20families%20in%20Flint%20and%20provided%20more%20than%20%246.7%20million%20in%20cash%20payments%20to%20support%20Flint%20moms%20and%20babies\">Initially launched in Flint last year<\/a><\/u><\/span>, Rx Kids is a first-of-its-kind program that uplifts families in need by providing a no-strings-attached cash allowance to pregnant mothers and new parents, regardless of their income. Thanks to <span><u><a id=\"OWAbbde2bdb-2173-9553-059e-5a31f412003d\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW101785949 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/cherry\/2023\/09\/13\/flints-children\/#:~:text=securing%20the%20%2416.5%20million%20in%20crucial%20funding%20allocated%20to%20the%20Rx%20Kids%20program%20in%20the%202024%20state%20budget\" data-linkindex=\"4\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/cherry\/2023\/09\/13\/flints-children\/#:~:text=securing%20the%20%2416.5%20million%20in%20crucial%20funding%20allocated%20to%20the%20Rx%20Kids%20program%20in%20the%202024%20state%20budget\">previous budget support from Michigan Senate Democrats<\/a><\/u><\/span>, Rx Kids has also expanded to Kalamazoo, Pontiac, Clare County, and the eastern Upper Peninsula. Building on that progress, Senate Bill 309 would enable the innovative program to reach more families across the state, aiming to improve maternal and child health outcomes, fight childhood poverty, and bolster access to nutritious food and safe housing.
