Outrage about headlines is not enough. We must be willing to change the way we do things if we expect improved community-police relations and a better-prepared police force.
I recently co-sponsored Senate Bill 945, introduced by my colleague, state Sen. Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) to require all Michigan police officers to complete mandated training in violence de-escalation, implicit bias, mental health screening, and procedural justice as part of the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) training.
The bill also requires MCOLES to prepare officers to seek mental health treatment themselves. Police officers have difficult and stressful jobs and they deserve training that will destigmatize officers who seek treatment to improve their personal and professional life.
Join me in calling on state Sen. Pete Lucido, chair of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, to bring the bill up for a full hearing and ensure we create better standards for our public safety professionals and our communities!
