LANSING, Mich. (Jan.\u00a09, 2026)\u00a0\u2014\u00a0This week,\u00a0Attorney General\u00a0Dana Nessel<\/b>\u00a0issued\u00a0an\u00a0official legal opinion<\/a><\/u>\u00a0concluding\u00a0that\u00a0House Republicans\u2019 $645 million cut\u00a0to bipartisan,\u00a0already agreed-upon\u00a0funding to programs around the state\u00a0was\u00a0unconstitutional.\u00a0<\/b>Among\u00a0the\u00a0programming facing cuts<\/a><\/u>\u00a0was the redevelopment of the\u00a0historic\u00a0Hayes Hotel,<\/a><\/u>\u00a0which\u00a0was slated to provide housing and other community revitalization efforts to the city of Jackson.\u00a0Since the December cuts, the Hayes Hotel\u2019s construction has paused,\u00a0causing further\u00a0weather-related\u00a0damage and delays\u00a0to the project.<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/u>In response to the Attorney General\u2019s opinion, Sen.\u00a0Sue Shink\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Northfield Twp.) has issued the following statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe redevelopment of Hayes Hotel is one of many projects in my district focused on improving community spaces and stimulating local economies that were put at risk when House Republicans ripped away funding under the guise of \u2018waste\u2019 and \u2018abuse.\u2019 Other programs on the chopping block included support for new and expecting mothers, temporary housing for those experiencing homelessness, and wigs for children with cancer. Michigan residents deserve leaders who truly care about their quality of life, not ones who play political theater and cut corners during times of hardship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0livid with the actions of House Republicans,\u00a0but relieved that Attorney General Nessel\u00a0has\u00a0made it\u00a0apparent\u00a0that this political stunt\u00a0was\u00a0not only\u00a0heartless, but\u00a0unconstitutional.\u00a0These cuts\u00a0would have been\u00a0devastating\u00a0to my\u00a0district and to communities around the state, and\u00a0so\u00a0I am grateful\u00a0that this\u00a0funding\u00a0will be restored\u00a0for the people and programs around Michigan it was promised to.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n
