Sen. Singh celebrates 2025 state budget win, presents $200,000 check for storm clean-up costs in Perry
PERRY, Mich. (Sept. 6, 2024) — Sen. Sam Singh (D-East Lansing) has issued the statement below after presenting the City of Perry City Council with a ceremonial $200,000 check last night to help cover storm-related clean-up costs from a tornado that swept through the city on Aug. 11, 2023. This funding, officially secured in the 2025 state budget, covers the significant financial gap left over after insurance was estimated to cover $300,000 of the approximately $500,000 in costs needed to restore damage to trees and sidewalks, three Dept. of Public Works barns, and City Hall.
“As state legislators, it’s our responsibility to ensure our communities are equipped to handle the potential damage done by unexpected and unprecedented severe weather events. I’m proud to say my Senate colleagues and I were able to use a portion of the new state budget to do just that — secure $200,000 to provide financial relief to the City of Perry for the expenses they incurred following the tornado last August. This funding will ensure the city can recoup their finances and continue to focus on what’s most important: providing the Perry community with the essential, quality services they rely on every day.”
