With the costs of gas, groceries, utilities, and other essentials on the rise, Senate Dems\u2019 2027 state budget proposal works to make life more affordable for Michigan residents by:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the face of economic uncertainty, rising costs, and federal funding gaps, my Senate Democratic colleagues and I have put forward high-impact, targeted investments, reflecting our commitment to delivering real solutions for the people of Michigan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These proposals now head to the House for further consideration. Earlier this week, I was proud to join my colleagues in\u00a0<\/span>passing another record\u00a0education proposal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0ensure\u00a0all those in the classroom have the support they deserve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For the fourth consecutive year, Senate Dems\u2019 proposal includes a per-pupil increase for a total of $10,300. This investment is paired with a new weighted funding formula that would provide more predictable school funding for years to come, giving districts the ability to make strategic, long-term plans to support student success. While we wait for them to schedule a vote, I encourage you to\u00a0<\/span>take our survey<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and let me know your thoughts on how social media is impacting our youngest generation \u2014 your input can help shape what the final package looks like to ensure we meet the needs of Michigan families.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nursing home residents, just like anyone else,\u00a0deserve to\u00a0age in dignity at facilities that provide quality care and clean,\u00a0safe living conditions.\u00a0The reality in\u00a0Michigan,\u00a0however, is that many residents are\u00a0<\/span>not\u00a0<\/span><\/i>getting the care they need, as\u00a0<\/span>highlighted in\u00a0a\u00a0hearing I held in\u00a0the Senate Oversight Committee this past week<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During this hearing, the firsthand testimony of nursing home residents, advocates, and industry experts explained how\u00a0budget constraints have resulted in\u00a0negative\u00a0consequences for\u00a0these communities. From a lack of staffing\u00a0that leaves\u00a0residents unseen for lengthy periods of time to poor food quality and insufficient supplies,\u00a0like toilet paper and towels,\u00a0the challenges facing nursing home\u00a0residents in Michigan are as widespread as they are\u00a0alarming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In some circumstances, however,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the lack of financial\u00a0transparency\u00a0required of\u00a0these facilities that\u00a0undermines\u00a0these issues. Specifically, as testifiers shared, some nursing\u00a0home owners\u00a0are using loopholes to\u00a0funnel their profits into other companies\u00a0that are\u00a0involved in the operations of the home.\u00a0Referred to\u00a0as \u201cprofit tunneling,\u201d this exploitive practice enables ownership to hide\u00a0profits\u00a0for their own benefit\u00a0at the expense of\u00a0providing\u00a0residents with quality care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As Michigan\u2019s\u00a0rapidly\u00a0aging population increases\u00a0demand for these facilities, these are\u00a0issues\u00a0that require further attention to address\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0something\u00a0I remain committed to\u00a0working on\u00a0with stakeholders and colleagues in the weeks ahead.\u00a0To watch the hearing, click\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Along with working to craft a balanced state budget on time that delivers meaningful relief for Michiganders, my Senate Dem colleagues and I have also been busy driving forward legislation to address critical issues facing residents and communities across the state. This past\u00a0month,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0proud to report that\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0made some progress advancing bills to:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Narrow the gender wage gap\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2014 The gender wage gap in Michigan\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0only one of the worst in the country \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0growing. To help address this issue, my Senate colleagues and I passed legislation to ban employers from seeking irrelevant information about an applicant\u2019s past pay and credit history while making hiring and compensation decisions. For too long, these practices have contributed to unfair employment-related decisions that unfairly\u00a0impact\u00a0women and prevent them from accessing the opportunities and wages they deserve. While it will take a comprehensive effort to close the gender pay gap in Michigan,\u00a0<\/span>the legislation we passed\u00a0last month<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a solid step in the right direction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Support Michigan nurses<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u2014 Despite already working long shifts, nurses are often forced to stay overtime, which could mean staying for shifts of 16 or more hours. Unable to say no, mandatory overtime\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0only grueling for nurses, contributing to high burnout rates, but it also poses risks to patients and the care they are provided. To improve working conditions for our nurses and protect Michiganders seeking care, the\u00a0<\/span>Michigan Senate passed bipartisan legislation\u00a0a couple of weeks ago<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that would end this dangerous practice while also implementing\u00a0additional\u00a0safeguards to ensure nurses can get the rest they need.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Combat human trafficking<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u2014 Building on our\u00a0<\/span>previous efforts to address human trafficking in Michigan<\/span><\/a>, Senate Dems are ushering forward a new bill that would help tackle the issue by requiring every hotel and motel in the state to prominently display the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline number. With Michigan hotspots offering some of the best fishing in the country,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0miss out \u2014 grab your gear and hit the water!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Before you do though, make sure to thoroughly review the\u00a0<\/span>2026 Michigan Fishing Regulations<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to learn any new regulations that apply to your favorite fishing spots. And of course, make sure your fishing license is up to date. Licenses are affordable and can be bought at many stores or online at\u00a0<\/span>Michigan.gov\/Fishing<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Whether you want to install a fence or plant a tree, if spring fever has you itching to do some landscaping projects around the yard that involve digging, remember to first reach out to MISS DIG 811 beforehand so that underground utility lines can be marked for safety.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n April is Safe Digging Month, an annual reminder for Michiganders\u2019 legal responsibility to call 811 or head to\u00a0<\/span>MISSDIG811.org<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at least three days before they start a project that involves putting a shovel in the ground. Contacting MISS DIG 811 is free and allows crews to mark buried utility lines in advance to prevent costly damage, service disruptions, and risks of\u00a0serious injury\u00a0or death.
