Dear Neighbor,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here in Michigan, we are dedicated to cultivating inclusion, belonging, and welcome for everyone \u2014 not just during Pride Month but every day year-round. \ufe0f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the onset of our state\u2019s first Senate Democratic Majority in over forty years, my colleagues and I have taken swift, decisive action to expand protections for the LGBTQ+ community. In fact,\u00a0<\/span>one of the first bills<\/span><\/a>\u00a0we passed in our new majority was the historic expansion of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA), safeguarding Michiganders from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression \u2014 a collaborative effort that was decades in the making. Senate Democrats also passed\u00a0<\/span>new laws<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that banned the harmful practice of conversion therapy for minors,\u00a0<\/span>put a stop to \u201cgay and trans panic defense<\/span><\/a>,\u201d\u00a0and championed\u00a0<\/span>a resolution<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that recognizes June as Pride Month in Michigan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These efforts are a meaningful step forward for Michigan, but they are certainly not the last. With all the uncertainty and chaos coming out of Washington D.C., we recognize the continued need for education and awareness to end discrimination and prejudice \u2014 and\u00a0we’ll\u00a0always continue fighting to ensure every Michigander can live freely and authentically.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Happy\u00a0Pride\u00a0Month \u2014 How Senate Democrats Have\u00a0Blocked\u00a0Anti-Trans\u00a0Bills from Advancing in the Michigan Legislature\u00a0<\/h1>\n

As mentioned in the intro letter, Michigan Senate Democrats have been committed to advancing legislation that\u00a0supports\u00a0the rights of every Michigander to live freely and authentically.\u00a0Along with those efforts,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0also been hard at work defending Michiganders from being subjected to hateful and harmful bills passed out of the\u00a0Michigan House.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the budget cycle last year, the Republican-controlled House had passed a\u00a0plan\u00a0containing\u00a0over 20\u00a0bills\u00a0<\/span>aimed at restricting the rights, safety and dignity of\u00a0trans and gender non-conforming\u00a0Michiganders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
<\/span>\u00a0
<\/span>Throughout budget negotiations, we were clear: we would not compromise our values. Because of that leadership, none of these bills advanced in the Senate, and all discriminatory provisions were removed from the final budget signed into law.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What You Can Do\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Building\u00a0a brighter, more inclusive state\u00a0where people can live\u00a0free\u00a0to\u00a0be their true selves\u00a0requires\u00a0all of us showing up, speaking out, and standing up.\u00a0Here\u2019s\u00a0a few actionable ways to build that future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vote\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>in every election\u00a0\u2014\u00a0local, state, and federal.\u00a0You hold the power to put\u00a0people in office who will be tireless advocates for our\u00a0LGBTQ+\u00a0friends and neighbors \u2014 use it!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Show up<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>Pride events<\/span><\/a>, school board meetings, community forums, and anywhere issues\u00a0pertaining to\u00a0gay, lesbian, trans,\u00a0and non-binary folks are being highlighted,\u00a0discussed,\u00a0or debated.\u00a0Your presence and\u00a0your voice\u00a0matter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Engage<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0with your representatives \u2014 we work for you\u00a0and\u00a0want to hear from you!\u00a0Give us a call\u00a0or\u00a0send us a message\u00a0and\u00a0come out to one of our community events.\u00a0Let us know how we can better\u00a0represent\u00a0you \u2014 and those you love \u2014 at the Capitol and out\u00a0in\u00a0the community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

East Lansing Pride<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
