LANSING — Sen. Paul Wojno (D-Warren) today welcomed U.S. Army Col. Norman M. Fabian, a former member of the Navy and Army National Guard, as his special guest for the annual Michigan Senate Memorial Day service that honors current and former military servicemembers.
“Colonel Fabian has been a role model to the Warren community not only for his decades of military service, but as a great, humble person who works to make our community better each and every day,” Sen. Wojno said. “His celebrated service in the Navy and Army Reserves goes to show the principled man that he is, and I hope the folks in Macomb see how special they are to have such a man in their community.”
Col. Fabian began his military service upon graduating from the U.S. Navy in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in naval engineering. In 2002, he was deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for three years, and then was sent to serve in Al Kisik, Iraq as an Intelligence Officer with the 1st Infantry Division, First Cavalry Division, and 101st Airborne Division, where he was ultimately promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In 2012, Col. Fabian assisted with humanitarian efforts in Haiti after an earthquake devastated the area, and in June 2015, he was promoted to the rank of colonel and accepted a position with the Michigan Army National Guard.
His distinguished service has earned him 17 awards, including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Naval Reserve Medal (Army Service Ribbon), and United Nations Service Medal.
Currently, Col. Fabian serves in the Army National Guard, as a paramedic and firefighter instructor, and as a Programs Director at the Dorsey Emergency Medical Academy. He resides in his hometown of Warren.
