Holiday Consumer Protection
Attorney General Dana Nessel is highlighting five consumer scams this week to help residents protect their wallets, packages, and personal information from being stolen during this holiday season.
A few scams to be aware of:
- Social Media Spoofing: Before believing in that “too-good-to-be-true” post, check the URL and look for the lock symbol to confirm the authenticity of the website.
- Wise Charitable Giving: Before donating this season, verify the organization through sites like Charity Navigator or the IRS database.
- Porch Pirates: Remember to track packages, use secure delivery options, and consider a camera or pickup locker.
- Ransomware: Keep devices updated and avoid suspicious links to prevent falling victim to hackers.
- Travel Tips: Book through trusted travel sites, verify listings, and never wire money for reservations.
If you or someone you know has experienced one of these scams, you may file a compliant with the Attorney General’s Office here.
Keeping Your Animals Warm and Safe with Below Freezing Temperatures
With the freezing temperatures here, it is important to know your animal’s limits in cold weather. This can help you to prevent hyperthermia, frostbite, and more in your pets. Animals are vulnerable to freezing temperatures, and it is recommended to keep pets inside as much as possible and limit their walk and bathroom time during these weather conditions. Animals that are young or elderly, short-coated, or have chronic health conditions are more at risk in frigid temperatures.
The following tips can help to keep your animals safe from the cold:
- Bring your pets indoors whenever possible or provide shelter with dry bedding.
- Ensure your pets’ water source does not freeze.
- Check paws for injury and clean deicers from them. Cold and snowy surfaces can cause paw pads to crack and bleed. Deicers can be toxic to pets.
- Some animals may need more calories to maintain their body heat, especially if they spend time outdoors.
- Thoroughly clean areas where antifreeze may have spilled.

Winter Month Fire Prevention
Fires are much more likely to occur in the winter months due to heaters, holiday decorations, and holiday cooking. It is important to be aware of these hazards and take steps to avoid potential dangers. Below are some fire prevention tips.
- Be mindful of space heaters: Make sure space heaters are on flat surfaces and not touching anything that could catch on fire. Also be sure to turn them off when not in use.
- Electrical safety: Be sure to not overload your extension cords — this can cause overheating and electrical fires. Also ensure you check for damage to cords and lights.
- Do not leave holiday cooking unattended: Leaving your holiday meal unattended while preparing it can lead to fires. It is easy to forget about food while cooking a large holiday meal, so consider setting timers to remind you to check on food while it is cooking. Also consider keeping a lid nearby to smother any potential fires and be careful of grease nearby, as grease can ignite fires.
- Candle safety: While lighting candles is a great way to feel festive, make certain that you are not leaving them unattended. Also be sure to not light candles within a foot of flammable materials or in reach of children or pets. You may also want to consider electric candle warmers as a safer alternative.
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy: Having a fire extinguisher in your home is vital to fire safety, especially in the winter months. Some fires such as electrical ones cannot be easily put out with water.
