LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Paul Wojno (D–Warren) has released the following statement after the Michigan Senate voted along party lines to approve House Concurrent Resolution 1 this morning. The resolution overturns Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order 2019-02, which would restructure the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) into the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
“For too long, Michiganders have needed a champion in our state government willing to fight for their access to clean, safe drinking water. After the Flint water crisis and the widespread discovery of PFAS, it’s evident our state government needs fewer levels of bureaucracy and more accountability. The reorganization of DEQ is just what Michigan needs to start this new era of a streamlined, and more effective, state government.
“There is no room for political games when it comes to the public’s health. I stand behind Governor Whitmer, and I will continue to fight for the people of Michigan — and for protecting our Great Lakes and this state’s wonderful natural resources.”
