LANSING, Mich. (March 24, 2022) — Sen. Paul Wojno (D-Warren) today released the following statement after the Michigan Senate sent a $4.8 billion bipartisan supplemental budget appropriations bill package to the governor, focused on infrastructure investments. The legislation includes a $72 million investment to be used for priority wastewater infrastructure projects to address combined sewer overflows, pumping capacity, and sewer rehabilitation in Macomb County:
“Macomb residents have faced debilitating sewage and wastewater issues over the course of the past few years. Between the risk of sewage overflow polluting Lake St. Clair or the giant sinkhole in Fraser, my residents have every right to demand more from their state government. Today, I am proud to deliver much-needed investments to my district that will protect Michigan’s critical waterways and public health. This $72 million investment is going to be necessary for protecting our roadways from outdated infrastructure failings.
“While there is still more work to be done to protect the health and safety of all Macomb residents, this is a good start that invests in our health, our economy, and our people, which is what is truly needed to rebuild our state in the wake of the many difficult challenges we have faced in the past few years. I look forward to working with my colleagues, on both sides of the aisle, to make Macomb a priority as we work together on allocating the remaining federal dollars and look toward the next fiscal year budget.”
