LANSING, Mich. (May 1, 2024) – Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) released the following statement after committee passage of a supplemental spending bill today that includes language that directs the State Budget Office to lapse the remaining amount of two specific grants funded in Fiscal Year 2023. The lapses follow several recent reports of mismanagement of funds appropriated for grants related to a business accelerator organization and a Mid-Michigan health facility.

“The people of Michigan have entrusted us to oversee our state budget — a budget funded on years of hard-earned tax dollars from our neighbors, friends, and family. I do not take this responsibility lightly, and I know my colleagues on both sides of the aisle would agree. As Appropriations Chair, my top priority is making sure we make and build upon investments that will improve outcomes for all Michiganders by funding diverse programs and organizations that work toward grassroots and structural change in our communities. When one of our grantees falls short of those expectations, or shows they do not share in that mission, this Legislature will correct course and put those dollars toward a sounder investment in our people.”
