Sen. Sarah Anthony celebrates with NAACP and the Divine Nine on the creation of a pathway for organizations to obtain custom license plates

LANSING, Mich. (May 22, 2024) – Today, Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) addressed the annual Capitol Advocacy Day event hosted by the NAACP, the Divine Nine, and Jack and Jill of America. This advocacy day is dedicated to promoting active engagement in local communities, honoring a lifelong commitment to volunteerism and social justice. Sen. Anthony delivered a brief speech, providing updates on legislative activities, the state budget process, and the initiation of the special organization plate program.

“For 40 years — my entire lifetime — we have not been able to move transformational policies on behalf of our people,” said Sen. Anthony. “Now, by using both policy and the budget as powerful tools, we can ensure that African Americans and other people of color are well represented, not just in the halls of power but also in our communities, leading to transformational change.

The 2024 Legislative Advocacy Day featured a full schedule of discussions and legislative briefings on a wide array of topics, including civil rights, ballot access and election laws.

“Historic funding for the civil rights department doesn’t just happen. Policies that support Black people don’t just happen,” said Sen. Anthony. “When organizations like the NAACP, the Divine Nine, and Jack and Jill of America take time out of their day to advocate for our communities, it energizes and motivates us legislators to keep showing up for them. I’m incredibly thankful for the hard work these organizations do for their members and their communities across Michigan.”

The highlight of the advocacy day event was the announcement of a new pathway for organizations to obtain custom license plates featuring their emblems. To apply, an organization must first gather commitments from at least 500 members to purchase the plate. Once this requirement is met, the organization must complete an application for a New Special Organization License Plate. Finally, the Michigan Department of State will review and approve the application, completing the process. More information on the process and a link to the application form can be found on Sen. Anthony’s website at https://senatoranthony.com/ under Resources.

“Today is a day of celebration. Thanks to the partnership between my office and the Secretary of State, we have created a pathway for these organizations to have custom license plates with their emblems,” said Sen. Anthony. “We’ve discussed the importance of attracting diverse talent to Michigan. This is one small step we can take to show up in a big way and proudly represent our organizations in our communities.”
