Dear Neighbor,
I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well. In this edition of our FY 2024 ‘Budget for the People’ eNews series, we will take a closer look at the general government state budget for fiscal year 2024. There were two main budget bills that were signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently. The school aid budget encompasses all aspects of education funding, including K-12 and post-secondary education, for school districts, various programs and services. The general omnibus budget is comprised of funding to help grow the economy, lower costs for families and deliver on kitchen-table issues.
Moreover, the omnibus budget helps protect public safety and boosts access to healthcare. Nothing is more important to me than protecting your health and well-being — no matter where you live. Gov. Whitmer signed this budget bill on July 31, and I’m proud to share more about these important investments that will help our state for years to come. Both budget bills will take effect on October 1, the first day of the new fiscal year.

General Government Budget
TOTAL: $81.7 billion
Across Michigan
Public Health
- $140 million to fund a $0.85 per hour wage increase for direct care workers and non-clinical nursing facility staff in Michigan
- $49.5 million to implement recommendations from the Racial Disparities Task Force, including neighborhood health grants, mobile health units, sickle cell support and more
- $56.4 million to fund Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies, a bipartisan initiative that supports pregnant women, new mothers and infants
- $25 million increase in support to local health departments to provide essential services
- $10 million to create a new foster care respite care program to provide temporary, occasional relief to foster parents
- $4.9 million over 2 years for Double-Up Food Bucks, boosting access to fresh fruits and vegetables for Michiganders on food assistance
Public Safety
- $171.5 million in public safety grants for communities across the state
- $34.2 million to enact various recommendations from the Task Force on Juvenile
Justice Reform
- $14.4 million to improve safety and accountability in correctional facilities, including $7 million to outfit corrections officers with body cameras
- $10.5 million in new statutory revenue sharing dedicated specifically for public safety, including employee recruitment, retention, training and equipment for first responders
- $2.9 million to implement gun violence prevention policies
- $2 million for veteran homelessness grants, helping veterans access affordable housing and avoid homelessness
In Mid-Michigan
- $7.5 million for Delhi Township Fire Station to implement needed health and safety improvements to the fire department
- $6 million for Lansing Prevention and Treatment Services to expand child and family services
- $6 million for Ingham County’s behavioral health campus
- $900,000 for Eaton County’s Sheriff’s Department
- $800,000 for a warming center that Lansing’s homeless population can utilize during the cold winter months
Community Updates
This month, we kicked off our 2023 budget tours. My team and I will be traveling across the state to see firsthand how our investments will be implemented and how impactful the funds will be for each community. This gives us a chance to meet with local leaders and constituents throughout Michigan to learn how we can continue to support them and thrive as a state for years to come.
We began the tours right here at home and visited different sites throughout District 21. From the Hill Center Track in South Lansing to the Horner Mill in Eaton Rapids, my team and I learned how crucial this funding will be for people throughout Mid-Michigan.
