LANSING, Mich. (Nov. 12, 2021) — Today, Sen. Rosemary Bayer (D-Beverly Hills) issued the following statement in the wake of a student walkout at Bloomfield Hills High School, that was planned to urge greater dialogue on anti-racism efforts among school officials, parents, and students:
“The reports of hate speech and racist behavior at Bloomfield Hills High School in recent days have been extremely troubling. All students deserve the right to a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment and should not have to fear for their safety based on the color of their skin. Already, there is too much division in our nation — and these latest incidents make it clear that we must come together and have hard conversations about respect, tolerance, and the role we all play in creating a better society and community.
“Time and again, regardless of if it’s teaching an honest and accurate history curriculum, following safety protocols to reduce the spread of COVID-19, or seeking civility at school board meetings, people are just asking those in charge to do the right thing for the greater good. Symbols of hate and hateful words have no place in our community, and I applaud our students for making their voices heard and educators for working to empower our kids as they grow into the future generation of leaders.”
To address the rising concerns, the Bloomfield Township Police Department will be hosting a Community Collaboration Event to move anti-racism work forward on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at Bloomfield Hills High School. All interested community members are invited to participate.
