LANSING, Mich. (May 25, 2022) — Michigan’s legislative Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus, chaired by Sen. Rosemary Bayer (D-Beverly Hills) and Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac), has issued the following statement after at least 19 elementary students and two adults were killed yesterday at an Uvalde, Texas school, making it the deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade:
“There are no words to accurately describe the heartbreak and sorrow we feel for the families who lost a child at yesterday’s Texas elementary school shooting. No community should have to survive a massacre that targets their children. Sadly, Oakland County and Michigan, collectively, have been devastated by this type of gun violence, too.
“As legislators and parents, we are sick and tired of the disgusting and amoral status quo that has allowed for so many tragic shootings in 2022 alone. We are outraged and disturbed at the lack of policy solutions, votes, and action not only from Michigan’s elected Republicans, but from elected Republicans around the country who refuse to even acknowledge that gun violence is a public health crisis. Our hearts go out to the families grieving the loss of children with futures unrealized, and for the communities like Oxford who are undoubtedly retraumatized seeing this tragedy play out again.”
