LANSING, Mich. (April 21, 2026) — Today, the Michigan Senate passed a bipartisan resolution, sponsored by Sen. Rosemary Bayer (D-West Bloomfield), to encourage the state and nation to deepen economic ties with Taiwan, a key trade partner of the U.S.

“I am proud to, once again, offer a resolution to commemorate Michigan’s strong relationship with Taiwan,” said Sen Bayer. “Taiwan has been an essential trading partner for both Michigan and the United States. From opening the Michigan Taiwan Office to actions we can take now at the state and national level, I hope we continue to strengthen our relationship with the island of Taiwan, fueling our collective economic growth for decades to come.”

Along with encouraging Michigan to deepen its ties with Taiwan, Senate Resolution 111 urges the U.S. and Taiwan to enter additional bilateral trade agreements and to address the issue of double taxation. It also calls on members of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity to allow Taiwan to participate in their organization, which currently promotes economic growth in the U.S. and 13 other partner countries.

The U.S. is Taiwan’s second-largest trading partner, providing a particularly significant source of agricultural products. Michigan also does significant business with the island nation, spurring the creation of the Michigan Taiwan Office in 2024 to promote further investment by Taiwanese firms in the state.
