From boosting per-pupil funding to providing bonuses for teachers, this budget builds on Senate Dems’ work to support students and schools
LANSING, Mich. (April 30, 2026) — Today, Senate Democrats passed their 2027 education budget proposal, which makes record investments to ensure all those in the classroom have the support they deserve. Senate Bill 860 includes investments to foster safe and healthy learning environments, help students achieve literacy, and recruit and retain the best educators.
“If we want Michigan to succeed long term, we have to invest in the future of our state: our kids,” said Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), a former educator and current Chair of the PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee. “That belief is at the core of our proposed education budget, which makes record investments in Michigan students and schools. From increasing per-pupil funding and literacy resources to implementing a new weighted funding formula that gives school districts the stability to make strategic, long-term plans — this budget reflects our commitment to giving every child the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.”
While Washington Republicans have proposed multi-billion dollar cuts to education for the coming school year, Senate Democrats are stepping up and prioritizing Michigan students and teachers over tax cuts for the wealthy. This includes:

A per-pupil increase with a new weighted funding formula that would provide more predictable school funding for years to come, giving districts the ability to make strategic, long-term plans to support student success.

A historic $235 million for literacy, including resources for early literacy coaches, school libraries, LETRS training, and curriculum supports.

Bonuses for educators to help recruit and retain qualified teachers as Michigan continues to face a gap between the number of certified teachers entering the profession and those leaving the classroom.

An additional $300 million for school safety and mental health efforts, which will allow districts to hire more counselors and social workers and modernize security systems.
Senate Democrats’ budget proposal continues to invest in programs that work and provide real relief for families, including the widely popular free school meals program to ensure kids are fed and ready to learn. The budget also strengthens scholarships to help Michiganders get the education they need to land the career they want, whether pursuing a skilled trade or a college degree.
Today’s action on the education budget follows the passage yesterday of Senate Bill 878, budget legislation aimed at lowering costs, protecting residents from harmful federal decisions, and growing an economy that benefits all Michiganders. Both budget bills now head to the House for further consideration.
