Lansing, Mich. (March 21, 2023) — The Michigan State House and Senate finalized passage of Senate Bill 34 and House Bill 4006 today, repealing the anti-worker policy that was implemented under Gov. Rick Snyder over a decade ago. Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) sponsored SB 34, which would repeal the worker suppression law for private employees. House Bill 4006, sponsored by Rep. Regina Weiss, would repeal it for public employees.

“We’re proud to have passed this historic repeal,” said Sen. Camilleri. “Workers can finally compete on an even playing field with the knowledge that the State of Michigan has their back.”

“As the son and grandson of union auto workers, it’s hard to put into words what this day means to me,” Camilleri added. “We know that the true power in our state lies with our workers, and this historic legislation will allow Michigan workers to more freely negotiate for the pay, benefits, and protections they deserve.”

The bills will now head to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk for final passage into law. The governor is expected to sign them within the next week. The bills did not receive a single Republican vote and thus were unable to pass with immediate effect; they are expected to go into effect by April 2024.
