LANSING, Mich. (April 27, 2023) — Today, Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) introduced a resolution to declare April School Library Month.
For Camilleri, Senate Resolution 40 is as much about honoring school libraries and librarians as it is about calling attention to the stunning lack of school libraries across our state.
“In Michigan, every prison is required to have a library, but every school is not,” said Camilleri, a former teacher who has previously introduced legislation to require a library staffed by a certified Media Specialist in every Michigan school. “In fact, more and more over recent years, many schools do not have a school library at all, and even among those that do, many are not staffed by a certified media specialist. This is inexcusable—if we want to improve literacy outcomes for all our students, we need to give them the resources they need to learn and thrive.”
The resolution was supported by a majority of members of the Michigan Senate and adopted.
