Hello neighbor,

I hope that you and your family are doing well. Memorial Day is just around the corner, and I wanted to provide you with an update on what we’ve been working on as we’re getting ready to jump into summer.

I’m happy to share that my legislation to provide a permanent grade separation fund passed the Senate unanimously last week. Fixing our train crossing issues across Downriver and Western Wayne is something that I’m committed to getting done, and these bills will allow us to build more bridges at our most problematic rail crossings. Not only do these rail crossings result in headaches and frustration while on our daily commutes, they also present serious health and safety risks as they prevent our police officers, fire departments, and EMS from responding to emergency situations. I look forward to providing more updates as these bills continue to progress through our legislature.

The PreK-12 education budget that I put together with my colleagues was successfully voted out of the Senate recently. Our recommendations were slightly different than that of the House and the Governor, and we still have a lot of work in front of us as we continue negotiations towards a budget that is equitable and supports both our students and educators, but I’m excited to continue that work for our students, teachers and schools.

As a former educator, I’m always looking to recognize our talented and amazing teachers from Belleville to Wyandotte. If you would like to nominate a teacher that you know for our Teacher of the Month award, please fill out this form. I always enjoy surprising our educators with this award and letting them know that we appreciate all the hard work and dedication it takes to run a classroom.

I’d also like to thank everyone who came out to our Belleville Coffee Hour event with Representative Reggie Miller this past Monday and helped us start a dialogue on the important issues that we face in our Western Wayne communities.

My office and I are available to help you with any issue you may be having or answer any questions that you may have. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out should you need assistance.

In Solidarity,

Darrin Camilleri
