LANSING, Mich. (July 11, 2023) — Today, State Senator Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) and State Representative Kevin Coleman (D-Westland) announced that the 2023 state budget will include $4.9 million for the City of Wayne this funding will allow the city to replace the 400+ lead service lines that continue to pose a significant health risk to residents.

“Securing this funding was one of my top priorities in the 2023 budget. After meeting with officials at the City of Wayne and learning about the scale of the problem they were facing, it was clear to me we needed to step in and help speed up the timeline,” Camilleri said. “The City of Wayne has an incredibly hard-working staff who have been attempting to fix this problem for years with very limited resources, and this money will give peace of mind to hundreds of families who have had to worry about the safety of their drinking water for far too long.”

“I want to thank Senator Camilleri and Governor Whitmer for securing this much needed funding for the City of Wayne’s replacement of lead service lines,” Coleman added. “Safety is always number one for my constituents. Safe, affordable, drinking water is a basic human right for all, and the residents of Wayne deserve the peace of mind knowing the water they are drinking and using every day is free from lead. For their families now, and future generations. This $4.9 million will help to do just that.”
