Legislative Updates
As a former teacher and first-generation college student, I know just how difficult it can be for high school seniors to figure out their next step. In Michigan, only about 50% of students filled out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which unlocks federal, state, and institution-based aid and helps students consider all of their postsecondary options, and Michigan students are leaving nearly $100 million in federal aid on the table each year.
That’s why I was proud to introduce Senate Bill 463 earlier this year to require FAFSA completion in order for students to graduate and was even prouder that it received a hearing in the Senate Education Committee earlier this week. During the hearing, we heard from educators, parents, administrators, and college access advocates from across our state who shared how this legislation would help their students succeed. I look forward to continuing my work to pass this legislation and will be sure to provide more updates as this bill moves along the legislative process.
Community Updates
I was thrilled to hear last week that the City of Wayne was approved for a $458,000 Community Revitalization Grant through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. I was proud to advocate for this funding alongside city officials, and this much-needed boost will help with the further development of Wayne’s Downtown District.
