Hello Neighbor,

I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy as we enter February. My team and I have been hard at work both in Lansing and in Downriver and Western Wayne, and I’m excited to share some updates on what we’re doing to move our state forward and start dialogues across our communities.

Legislative Updates
Last week in Lansing, Governor Whitmer held her annual State of the State address where she laid out her priorities for the upcoming year. I was proud to have worked with her in 2023 as we invested in our students and educators, provided free breakfast and lunch to our children, signed legislation into law to repeal anti-union laws, established a permanent rail grade separation fund and more.

During this year’s address, the Governor acknowledged our need to lower costs for everyday Michiganders, and I look forward to doing just that by increasing access to Pre-K and higher education, lowering the costs of prescription drugs and finding ways to expand affordable housing options for more Michiganders.

Community Events

Coffee and Conversation
Unfortunately, our first coffee hour of the year on January 19 was canceled due to inclement weather. We have rescheduled this event for next Monday, February 5, and it will still be at the McDonald’s on Michigan Ave in Wayne. I look forward to having conversations with my neighbors about the needs of Wayne, and we hope to see you there!

WHEN: Monday, February 5, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: McDonald’s, 35111 Michigan Ave W, Wayne, MI 48184

Prescription Drug Affordability Town Hall
I’m excited to share details on two town hall events we will be hosting in February. The first will be centered on lowering prescription drug prices and ensuring that Michiganders aren’t choosing between their life-saving medications and other bills. I will be joined by Representative Jaime Churches, Trenton Mayor Steve Rzeppa and some experts on this topic, and we hope you can make it!

WHEN: Monday, February 12, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: Westfield Center, 2700 Westfield Rd, Trenton, MI 48183

Clean Energy Town Hall
Additionally, we’ll be holding another town hall focused on clean energy legislation we passed late last year, as well as other initiatives that our state needs to be taking in order to put us on track for increased renewable energy. This event will feature climate leaders from across our region, and it will be a great opportunity to learn about the steps we’re taking to fight climate change.

WHEN: Monday, February 26, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: Bacon Memorial Library, 45 Vinewood, Wyandotte, MI 48192

Pop-Up Constituent Service
Lastly, I want to share two opportunities to receive in-person assistance from my staff if you have any questions or need any help navigating our state departments. These events will be in Van Buren Township and Southgate, and my staff will be available to help with any issues you may be having with unemployment, MDHHS benefits or any other issue you may be experiencing.

WHEN: Friday, February 16, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
WHERE: Van Buren Senior Center, 13770 Haggerty Rd, Van Buren Township, MI 48111

WHEN: Monday, February 26, 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
WHERE: Fresh Bean Coffee Co, 18855 Eureka Rd, Southgate, MI 48195

If there is an event in your community that you would like for myself or my team to attend, I encourage you to share it with our office. We’re always looking to congratulate the opening of new businesses and celebrate our amazing neighbors across Downriver and Western Wayne.

I thank you for taking the time to stay engaged with our office. If you have any questions or comments on legislation, community issues, or any matter that is important to you please feel free to reach out to my office here.
