Camilleri is one of the youngest members of the Council, group’s first meeting is later today and being livestreamed
LANSING, Mich. (July 13, 2023) — Today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) has been selected to serve on her Growing Michigan Together Council. The council, which will look at ways to grow Michigan’s population and establish a population goal for 2050, will also focus on improving Pre-K-12 educational outcomes and long-term funding solutions for higher education including financial aid.
“I have always called Michigan home and will be proud to raise my family here one day, but that’s not the case for too many people. Over the past few decades, we’ve been seeing a lot of young people leave our state and take their resources with them for various reasons,” said Sen. Camilleri, one of the youngest members of the Council at age 31. “We need to get creative and discuss ways to strategically grow our population and improve educational outcomes, job opportunities, and housing options to ensure Michigan is a place more people want to come and stay.”
Camilleri is one of two State Senators appointed to the bipartisan council, and in total it will be made up of 28 members, 21 voting and 7 non-voting. As a former teacher and Chairman of the Senate Pre-K-12 Education Budget, Sen. Camilleri is able to provide personal perspective on the state’s educational needs as well as the issues and challenges facing his generational peers.
The council is charged with developing policies that will grow Michigan’s population by attracting and retaining talent and improve education and infrastructure. The work of the council to expand opportunities in jobs and education will help make Michigan the place that families want to call home.
