LANSING, Mich. – State Sen. Stephanie Chang (D–Detroit) today issued the following statement on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders to create the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and reorganize the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) under it.
“There are too many in Detroit, Downriver and around our state who are rightfully concerned about the quality and affordability of the water they drink and the air they breathe, because of the health problems they experience. I am optimistic that Gov. Whitmer’s directive to reorganize MDEQ and create an Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate will allow an opportunity for environmental justice issues to be addressed — and for wrongs to be righted — for communities disproportionately impacted by pollution, or water that’s been contaminated or priced out of their reach.”
