LANSING, Mich. (Jan. 11, 2023) — Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement after being sworn into office to begin her second term in the Michigan Senate:

“It is an incredible honor to begin my second term in the State Senate for the new Senate District 3,” Sen. Chang said. “I will continue to work as hard as I can to get things done to ensure that residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties have a quality education, an economy that works for everyone, clean air and safe, affordable water, a fair justice system, communities safe from gun violence, resilient infrastructure, and access to housing and health care for everyone. With the new majority focused on the people of Michigan, I am excited about this amazing opportunity to deliver the kind of bold, impactful change that Michiganders need and deserve.”

Sen. Chang is the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Michigan Legislature. She worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives and then as the Democratic Floor Leader for her first term in the Senate. She is currently the chair of the Senate Democrats’ Policy and Steering Committee and is serving her second term in the Michigan Senate.
