LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement after Governor Whitmer’s State of the State address.

“I am excited about working with the Governor and my colleagues to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all Michiganders. As the Governor mentioned this evening, we stand with hundreds of Michigan businesses, non-profit and faith-based organizations committed to expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to help Michigan’s working families who are struggling financially. This will help hundreds of thousands of people be able to pay for childcare, groceries, and transportation.

In the past week, we have seen more senseless gun violence, including a mass shooting that that felt incredibly personal to those of us who recently celebrated Lunar New Year. This is the year that the Michigan legislature must pass common sense gun violence prevention laws. I look forward to the expansion of background checks, ensuring gun owners are responsible for the safe storage of their firearms, and enacting Extreme Risk Protection Order laws to help protect Michigan communities from gun violence.

Water affordability is a growing issue for Michiganders everywhere – despite Michigan being the Great Lakes State. Water is a Human Right and a resource crucial to our public health. I will be continuing my work to ensure that all Michiganders have access to safe and affordable water. More and more experts and community stakeholders agree — we need to create a statewide water affordability program as a long-term solution to water insecurity.”
