LANSING, Mich. (June 20, 2024) — Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement after President Joe Biden announced a new executive action earlier this week that provides protections for certain immigrant spouses and children in families with a U.S. citizen:

“This Immigrant Heritage Month, I was pleased to see President Biden’s executive action earlier this week to keep more immigrant families together and to support our Dreamers. Being a truly welcoming country that is a beacon of hope and opportunity is an important way for us to clearly demonstrate our American values.

“Spouses and children of United States citizens will now be able to apply for lawful permanent residence without leaving the country. Dreamers who came to America as children and have received a college education will now be able to more quickly receive work visas so that they can continue to contribute to our economy and our communities.

“During this time when anti-immigrant rhetoric and fearmongering are on the rise, these positive steps forward from President Biden are welcome so that more of our neighbors can come out of the shadows and thrive. Michigan and America have been made stronger by immigrant families and I look forward to seeing the positive results of these policy changes.”
