LANSING, Mich. (April 19, 2021) — Sens. Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville) and Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit), Chair and Minority Vice Chair of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, respectively, have released the following statement about their legislative efforts in light of recent police shootings across the country:
“The recent police shootings of unarmed people around the country have impacted so many of us. The loss of men, women, and children of color have brought enormous pain to too many families and communities. As public officials, our duty is to develop solutions to systemic problems. We have been working together with our colleagues and stakeholders for months on a bipartisan package of bills that will address police accountability and transparency in Michigan. It’s clear that we need to make fundamental changes in our approach to public policy and policing, and we intend to address this need in the days ahead. The time is now.”
