DETROIT, Mich. (Nov. 29, 2021) — Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) has issued the following statement regarding a collapse today of aggregate materials at the Revere Dock site along the Detroit River, the second situation to have happened in two years:
“I learned about the Revere Copper site sinkhole and collapse into the Detroit River earlier this morning and have been in touch with officials at the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and other partners. I know EGLE is working hard to get testing done to see if there is any contamination and know there is conversation happening about how to repair the seawall. I am extremely disappointed and frustrated to learn that this site has collapsed again two years from the last collapse in 2019, potentially due to the storage of aggregate too close to the seawall.
“It is also extremely concerning to know that the material from the collapsed shoreline is still shifting. My residents deserve to have clear answers as soon as possible about any contamination or hazards to their health, and we need to take all possible steps at the city, state, and federal level to ensure this kind of collapse never happens again.”
Sen. Chang, alongside two other Senate Democratic colleagues, reintroduced legislation this year to protect major waterways and public health. The bills await action in the Senate Environmental Quality Committee.
