COMMUNITY UPDATES Lafayette Towers Fire This week, I sent a letter to the owner of Lafayette Towers, calling on them to install fire alarms that can be heard by residents — among other safety measures — after residents endured their second fire in less than a year, with some reporting they were unaware a fire was happening until fire trucks arrived. Disturbingly, I did the same thing last fall after hearing from residents in the Towers of a similar situation. I have again expressed my deep concern about this issue and again asked for a meeting with Lafayette Tower’s leadership to be updated on what they’ve done since my last letter. Home is supposed to be a place of peace, security, and serenity. I am once again supporting Lafayette Towers tenants in calling on the owners to install: A fire alarm system which can be heard by residents in every room of every unit on every floor;
Fort Street – Road Collapse A road failure occurred in the area of West Fort and Calvary Streets in Detroit on Sunday, June 5, whereby compromised concrete collapsed inward in an area approximately 100 feet in length. The cause of the road failure remains under investigation. Sheet piling was taking place as part of Gordie Howe International Bridge project construction activities in the area. A section of the road between Livernois and Campbell streets was temporarily closed, but there is now one lane of traffic in each direction. I convened a meeting with officials from the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, Bridging North America, MDOT, and city officials earlier this week and continue to push for transparency about the cause of the incident. Jeffersonian Apartments – Lack of Air Conditioning This week, I learned about Jeffersonian residents being told they had to leave their apartment building during this intense heat wave, due to the lack of air conditioning. This is just months after the building had no working elevator. Please know that this is unacceptable and that I am in communication with several tenants from whom I am learning more and more distressing incidents that have taken place at the apartment building. I am also in communication with the City of Detroit about how important it is that these residents are taken care of, for their health and safety. Thank you for reading this update.
