LANSING, Mich. (June 24, 2022) — Today, Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit) issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade precedent in the abortion rights case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

“Today is a dark day for those who can become pregnant not only because of the massive government overreach that this decision illogically deems reasonable, but because of the detrimental effects — physically, mentally, socially, and economically — that we all know come with people being denied an abortion. To those who are feeling devastated: We see you and hear you. Yes, this decision is heartbreaking, and it will exacerbate systemic failures. It is crystal clear that it’s up to us at the state level now to defend reproductive freedom.

“I remain committed to serving the people, and the large majority support the right to safe, legal abortion. It is time for us to end the state’s 1931 law banning abortion and criminalizing those who provide the procedure. Along with Senators Geiss, Bayer, and Brinks, I am proud to sponsor legislation to do just that, and it’s time we fight like hell to move it.”
