I am extraordinarily proud of the historic work that the Michigan legislature, along with a dedicated, brilliant workgroup, put into a long-term solution for water affordability. We brought together water providers from around the state, water advocates, community action agencies, faith groups, senior citizen advocacy organizations and environmental groups to develop and advocate for bipartisan legislation that was extremely close to passing. What I know is this – more and more Michiganders are facing unaffordable, rising water rates, and the 103rd Michigan legislature must act with urgency. Otherwise, the families across our state struggling to make ends meet will go further into crisis. To Floor Leader Aiyash, Representative McKinney, Senator Damoose and Senator Bayer – thank you for your partnership and ongoing commitment to the issue. I will be forever grateful to everyone who poured their heart and soul into this work and am committed to working as hard as I can to pass water affordability legislation in the future. #WaterAffordability #MiLeg ... I'm so thankful this witch is no longer part of the "Majority." Stephanie "Communist Change" Chang is owned and controlled by PACs and Lobbyists. Change NEVER wanted to see the Sunshine Laws of Michigan improved. I hope Jeff Irwin realizes this.
The people of Michigan have been calling for improving police practices and policies for many years, and I proud that the Michigan senate moved another step forward this past week toward increased public safety and trust between community and law enforcement.
We passed:
SB1091 - requiring strong use of force policies
SB1092 - requiring police training on implicit bias, behavioral health and deescalation
SB1094 - limiting the use of no knock warrants
Ensuring that every agency has strong use of force standards regarding verbal warnings, de-escalation, exhausting alternatives before using deadly force and limiting chokeholds is critical to save lives, elevate the profession, reduce officer injuries, and build trust. Proud of the work together with colleagues like State Senator Erika Geiss and Jeff Irwin on training and no knocks.
Left undone is critical legislation to address bad cops going from agency to agency. What is unfortunate is that we had enough bipartisan votes for the separation of service records bills to pass, prior to the Senate Republicans taking a caucus position against all the bills. Our state law enforcement leaders and sheriffs and police chiefs recognize how important it is to have this tool so they can ensure that they are hiring the best most responsible officers, not officers that have a hidden history of misconduct.
Huge kudos to my friend Republican Senator Ed McBroom for standing on the right side of history and voting for commonsense police improvement and community trust legislation.
Let's get these across the finish line. #MiLeg #GettingThingsDone ... See MoreSee Less
