Dear Friends and Neighbor,

February has been a month of significant events for our community, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on these happenings and extend my support as we move forward together.

First, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who participated in the Michigan presidential primary earlier this week on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024. Your engagement in this democratic process is vital, and I commend the efforts of Senate Democrats in championing increased access to voting rights, which made broader participation possible.

In the wake of the recent tornado that struck the Grand Blanc area on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, my thoughts are with all those affected. While the storm caused notable damage, I am relieved to hear that there were no reported injuries. Please know that my office stands ready to assist in any way possible as our community works to recover and rebuild.

As we continue to navigate these challenging times together, let us not forget to celebrate and honor the diversity that enriches our community. While Black History Month may have officially concluded, let us remain steadfast in recognizing and commemorating the invaluable contributions of African Americans throughout the year.

I want to reassure you that I am here to serve our community. If you have any questions, concerns, or if there’s anything my office can help you with, please reach out. You can contact me at 517-373-0142 (Lansing office), 810-233-9788 (District office), or via email at SenJCherry@senate.michigan.gov

Working for you,

John Cherry
State Senator
District 27

Pierce Park Nature Preserve

The once-dormant Pierce Park Golf Course site has since garnered attention from a dedicated group of neighbors committed to its revitalization. Led by Mike Keeler, President of Pierce Park Nature Preserve, Pierce Park received an $815,700 grant awarded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Plans are now underway to reimagine the former golf course as a vibrant wetland ecosystem. Spanning over 67 acres in the southeast corner of the College Cultural neighborhood, Pierce Park holds immense potential for transformation. The envisioned transformation, earmarking 12 acres for wetland creation, promises an aesthetically pleasing landscape for park-goers and will serve as a proactive measure against flooding, safeguarding neighboring residences from potential risks. With this grant, the vision for a revitalized, offering a beacon of hope and renewal for the environment and the community.

Flint Development Center

Spring is near! There couldn’t be a more thrilling time for the community as Flint Development Center unveils its new playground equipment thanks to the CS Mott Foundation. The anticipation of seeing children’s faces light up with joy as they explore and enjoy this haven for play is truly heartwarming. Thanks to this incredible gift, families can come together, creating lasting memories and fostering a sense of belonging. Let the games begin, and let’s embrace the spirit of fun and togetherness at FDC.

Legislative Updates

Update on Mobile Homes Legislation

Last week, Senate Bills 486490, a package of legislation I proudly sponsored to address the challenges within mobile home communities across Michigan, were brought up for testimony in the Senate Housing & Human Services Committee

Committee members heard strong support from various stakeholders, including dedicated leaders from MH Action, who journeyed from many corners of our state to advocate for these crucial bills.

These pieces of legislation represent a collective effort to confront the pressing issues faced by residents of manufactured housing communities, such as steep rent hikes, decaying infrastructure, and water-related health and safety concerns. From the outset, my colleagues and I have listened to the concerns of our constituents and worked tirelessly to craft solutions that prioritize the well-being and rights of homeowners and renters alike.

The testimony presented during the committee session underscored the urgent need for action. It reinforced the shared commitment to fostering equitable living conditions and empowering residents across Michigan.

I am optimistic that with the momentum generated by the testimony and the unwavering support of advocates, Senate Bills 486–490 will soon be successfully reported from committee and passed by the Michigan Senate. In doing so, my colleagues and I will signify a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to ensure that every resident in Michigan, regardless of their housing situation, has access to safe and affordable living conditions.

Legislation Ensuring Michigan’s Clean Energy Future Took Effect February 13

In 2023, Michigan Senate Democrats passed the Clean Energy Future plan in response to the escalating impact of climate change and the rising frequency of severe weather events and extreme temperatures in Michigan. The Clean Energy Future plan took effect last week — establishing clean energy and renewable energy standards, elevating energy efficiency targets, establishing a new Community and Worker Economic Transition Office and broadening the responsibilities of the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).

These laws mark significant and historic progress toward a sustainable future for Michigan and lay a solid foundation for continued work to improve Michigan’s energy industry, while protecting our air, land and water. Read more here
