NanoGraf Corporation receives award from U.S. Dept. of Energy to build new manufacturing facility in Flint, advancing Sen. Cherry’s plans for Flint Commerce Center to bring jobs and economic boost to the district
FLINT, Mich. (Sept. 27, 2024) — The U.S. Dept. of Energy has awarded $60 million to the NanoGraf Corporation to build a new battery materials factory at the Flint Commerce Center, formerly known as the Buick City site. Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint) has issued the following statement after attending a NanoGraf-hosted event today celebrating this new investment:
“I was honored to join representatives from NanoGraf and the Dept. of Energy along with other elected officials and labor union partners to celebrate this significant investment in advancing manufacturing and clean energy in Flint.
“From the early days of putting together the redevelopment plans, to last year’s groundbreaking of Buick City to now, I have been incredibly proud to champion the transformation of Flint’s largest brownfield site into a hub of economic promise for the residents of Flint and Genesee County. Alongside partners, my team and I put full force efforts into the development of the Flint Commerce Center, securing resources so that this largescale economic development project could come to fruition, bringing jobs to the area and boosting our local economy. And, as underscored by this recent announcement — that’s what we’re doing.
“As the second employer to occupy this space, NanoGraf will unleash opportunities that will help catalyze the surrounding area and build towards a clean energy future — creating hundreds of jobs for local residents while producing high-performing battery materials to power 1.5 million EVs a year.
“We’re keeping manufacturing in Michigan, boosting U.S. supply chains and most notably — we’re doing it in Flint. I couldn’t be more excited of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far with the Flint Commerce Center and I remain committed to building towards a more prosperous future for the residents of Flint and Genesee County.”
