(August 28, 2023)  Today, Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) joined Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and state and local officials for a tour of the Michigan Veteran Homes in Chesterfield Township. The governor and Sen. Hertel discussed the “Make It in Michigan” budget’s support for the facility and other funding to address other needs of veterans and their families.

Throughout the budget process, I had the opportunity to meet with residents and leaders of the Chesterfield Veterans Home to discuss their needs,” said Sen. Hertel. Today, it was an honor to be able to tour the home with Governor Whitmer and discuss the benefits of continuing to fund this vital service in our state.

The Michigan Veteran Homes in Chesterfield Township is one of the state’s newest veteran facilities and the first and only veterans’ home in Metro Detroit. Construction began in 2019 and the home is located on the site of old barracks for the Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Sen. Hertel helped bring home numerous local budget wins for Senate District 12including funding for Selfridge Air National Guard Base, a transformational new Macomb County Jail Intake project and local water infrastructure projects. In addition, as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military, Veterans, State Police, Sen. Hertel also secured significant funding to help military servicemembers, veterans and their families throughout Michigan, including support for veteran suicide prevention to help address the trauma related to military service, and investment in Veterans Affairs claims assistance to ensure that military service members can easily access their benefits.
