DETROIT, Mich. (September 15, 2023) — In response to UAW auto workers declaring a strike after failing to reach an agreement before their contracts with General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Stellantis expired last night at midnight, State Senator Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) issued the following statement:

“Unions built the middle class, and the Detroit Three’s contracts with their UAW employees who live, work and build families here are crucial to the success of our region,” said Sen. Hertel. “I stand with all of the workers who are using every tool at their disposal to earn a fair contract that benefits working families, strengthens our automotive industry and sets our state up for economic success for years to come.”

Sen. Hertel represents a district with one of the highest concentrations of union labor in the state.
