Dear Neighbor,

I hope you and your family had a safe and fun Halloween. As the leaves continue to fall, the cold weather begins to take over and the Michigan Senate continues to deliver on the issues that matter most to residents — I wanted to take a moment to reach out and catch you up on the many things happening across our lakeshore district, as well as provide some information about our upcoming events.

As always, I’d love to know your thoughts on what topics you’re interested in or what questions you’d like to see answered. Please feel free to reach out to my office to share your perspective or seek assistance with any challenges you may be facing with state departments — we are here to serve you. You can reach my office by calling (517) 373-7315 or emailing SenKHertel@senate.michigan.gov

Thank you again for taking the time to read this newsletter — I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Kevin Hertel
State Senator

District Update

Continuing to Support Selfridge Air National Guard Base

Selfridge is a source of community pride and jobs, employing more than 600 workers on the base and providing a local economic benefit worth more than $700 million to residents and businesses in our area.

As Chair of the Military, Veterans, State Police Appropriations Subcommittee, I remain committed to ensuring that we are doing everything in our power to position Selfridge for long-term success, so that, should another fighter mission become available, we are the most favorable place to locate that mission.

In our 2024 state budget that took effect on October 1, we successfully secured $13 million to make the upgrades necessary for the base to compete for next generation aircraft and fighter missions. Read more about our work to protect the future of Selfridge here.

Connecting with Budding Entrepreneurs at a Small Business Town Hall

It was great working with Mayor Tom Semaan and the Anchor Bay Chamber to connect budding entrepreneurs with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the U.S. Small Business Administration and Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses who provide resources to Michiganders looking to start or expand their small business.

Connecting with Constituents Over Coffee

From investing in clean water infrastructure and protecting our environment to supporting our veterans and lowering the cost of prescription drugs — the Michigan Senate has been busy addressing the needs of Michiganders.

It was great to be back in the district to connect with constituents over coffee and talk about our efforts to address the issues impacting our community.

Trunk-or-Treating in Harrison Township

Team Hertel had a great time passing out candy and coloring books at the Harrison Township Parks and Recreation Trunk or Treat this year. Thanks to everyone who worked to move it inside to avoid the rain!

Ribbon Cutting at Karing Hands Healthcare Training

At a time when healthcare professionals are more needed than ever, programs providing young people and those seeking a career change an accessible path to their CNA are vital. Welcome to St. Clair Shores, Karing Hands Healthcare Training!

Celebrating the Grosse Pointe North Girls Soccer Team’s Historic Season

It was an honor to host the Grosse Pointe North Girls Soccer Team for a day at the Michigan Capitol and celebrate their record-breaking season. Their dedication, teamwork and unwavering commitment to excellence were key to bringing Grosse Pointe North their first state championship title for girls’ soccer. The success of these incredible athletes reminds us of the limitless potential Michigan students possess and the importance of investing in their bright futures.

Congratulations, Lady Norsemen!
