LANSING, Mich. (January 24, 2024) — Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s “State of the State” address tonight and her proposals to lower costs and grow Michigan’s economy:

“Michigan built the middle class and, for decades, fueled the world’s most innovative economy through good-paying, blue-collar manufacturing jobs. As the American Dream falls out of reach for too many Michiganders due to inflation, rising costs and jobs being shipped overseas, it’s time we return to our roots and make bold investments in Michigan’s greatest asset — our people — to spur economic growth.

“Last year, we began this important work by repealing the retirement tax and providing targeted tax relief for working families, but more work still lies ahead to create a Michigan where everyone can find a good-paying job, raise a family and save for a secure retirement. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and work with Gov. Whitmer and my legislative colleagues as we set our eyes on lowering costs, improving living standards and building a robust economy that works for all Michiganders.”
