CHESTERFIELD, Mich. (Aug. 22, 2025) — Thanks to their skilled staff and funding secured by Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores), a recent nursing home survey ranked the Michigan Veterans Home in Chesterfield Township as the number one nursing home in the state. After this announcement, Sen. Hertel, chair of the committee in charge of crafting the Michigan Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) budget, released the following statement:
“If you spend any time at the Chesterfield Veterans Homes, it’s easy to see why they earned this ranking. Their staff and army of volunteers go above and beyond on a daily basis to provide our aging vets with excellent care. Because of their dedication, the facility is more than just a place to live — it’s a true community where veterans can connect with one another and have a well-deserved retirement.
“I’m proud to play a small role in ensuring the home has the funding they need to achieve their goal of serving those who have served us, and I will continue doing everything in my power to make sure they can carry out this mission for years to come.”
The Michigan Veteran Homes in Chesterfield Township is one of the state’s newest veteran facilities, and it is the first and only veterans’ home in Metro Detroit. Construction began in 2019, and the home is located on the site of old barracks for the Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Most recently, Sen. Hertel worked with township Supervisor Brad Kersten and the DMVA to turn state-owned land next to homes into walking trails for veterans and community members to enjoy together.
