The two reflect on how strong partnerships between state and local leaders can benefit communities and create new opportunity

LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 25, 2026) — For Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s final “State of the State” address today, Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) brought Algonac Mayor Rocky Gillis as one of his honored guests. Following the governor’s speech, the two leaders issued the following statements, reflecting on the importance of working together to get things done:

“During my time in the Michigan Senate, there are few working relationships I value more than the ones I share with local leaders across our lakeshore district. By working hand-in-hand with city and township officials — no matter their political affiliation — we have been able to achieve some great things for our region. From securing investments for the Lions Field Swimming Pool and Algonac Activity Center to championing nearly $100 million to protect Lake St. Clair, this progress was only possible because state and local leaders set aside politics and built relationships around the shared goal of creating opportunity for the families who call our community home.” — Sen. Kevin Hertel

“As the mayor of a small town in St. Clair County, I never expected much from Lansing — that is, until Senator Hertel began representing us. Since his first day in office, he has been a true partner to the city of Algonac, helping secure over $1.5 million for projects that are near and dear to our community. His advocacy proves that when state and local leaders work together with a shared vision, small communities like ours can accomplish big things.” — Algonac Mayor Rocky Gillis

During his time in the legislature, Sen. Hertel has worked closely with local leaders, including Mayor Gillis, to bring home critical state resources that invest in District 12 communities. Among the initiatives the two have partnered on are securing the $1 million needed to reopen the Lions Field Community Swimming Pool and another $500,000 to support the renovation of the Algonac Activity Center.
