Transformational project to enhance the Algonac community was made possible by funds Sen. Hertel secured in the 2025 State Budget

ALGONAC, Mich. (June 16, 2026) — After being closed in July 2020 due to significant water loss and safety concerns, Algonac’s community pool has made a long-awaited comeback. Over the past several years, community leaders and residents have been actively working to restore this important public space. Following a $1 million investment secured by Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) in the 2025 State Budget, the pool was restored beyond its former glory and had a soft opening in July 2025. This past weekend marked its official opening for the 2026 season — the first fully summer it’ll be open to the public — and now with expanded programming,  including senior aerobics.

“Every community deserves to have a space where kids can play, and neighbors can gather together,” said Sen. Hertel. “After hearing from generations of residents about what this pool meant to the city before its unfortunate closing, I knew it was more than just a place to swim — it was essential to the fabric of the community. Thanks to the funding we secured in the state budget and a close partnership with the city, we’ve been able to bring this special space back to life, allowing families to continue making memories here for many summers.”

“If you ask any Algonac resident about their fondest summer memories of this town, you  will likely hear about their time spent at this pool,” said Algonac Mayor Rocky Gillis. “Losing this space was hard for our community, but thanks to Senator Hertel’s commitment to helping us restore this space, we’re finally able to reopen these gates and welcome families to jump back in. This is a proud achievement for Algonac, and we’re incredibly grateful for Senator Hertel for making this possible.”

On June 13, 2026, Sen. Kevin Hertel joins Algonac Mayor Rocky Gillis and excited community members to open the Lions Field Community Swimming Pool for the 2026 season with a cannonball into the water.

Algonac community hosts a much-anticipated soft opening for the pool in July 2025.
