Made possible by Michigan Strategic Fund incentives, the new project will create good-paying jobs and keep Michigan competitive in the evolving automobile industry

CHESTERFIELD, Mich. (July 11, 2024) — Earlier this week, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced new incentives for Gestamp, an automotive supplier, which will aid them in building a new 460,000-square-foot plant in Chesterfield that would create 390 jobs. The support comes through the Michigan Strategic Fund’s approval of three State Essential Services Assessment exemptions and a Michigan Business Development Program grant. After the announcement, Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) issued the following statement:

“A lot goes into building an environment where people want to live and work. From passing tax relief for retirees and working families to investing in education, building up our infrastructure and expanding our clean energy portfolio — we’ve been putting in the effort to make Michigan a place where workers and businesses alike can thrive. The Michigan Strategic Fund’s recent announcement builds on this work, helping to create good-paying jobs and keep our state competitive in the evolving auto industry. I’m proud to see our community selected to play a vital role in our automotive supply chain, and I look forward to continuing working to build a stronger, more inclusive state where everyone can raise a family, find economic security, and chase new opportunities.”

Gestamp is set to expand its Michigan manufacturing operations at three locations — Chelsea, Mason, and Lapeer — making Chesterfield their fourth factory in Michigan. These projects will add new production machinery and equipment needed to create parts for car manufacturers, enabling Gestamp to grow its presence in the state and supporting Michigan’s position as a leader in the manufacturing industry. Across all four locations, 580 qualified new jobs and a capital investment of up to $390.2 million is anticipated.
