LANSING — Sen. Jeff Irwin (D–Ann Arbor) has issued the following statement on Attorney General Dana Nessel’s lawsuit against Enbridge Inc.
“Thank you to Attorney General Nessel for taking legal action to shut down Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline and protect the Straits of Mackinac. Every day that we don’t act to remove this 66-year-old pipeline is another day that we put our state at the risk of an environmental disaster. I stand proudly in support of our Attorney General’s decision.
“In 2015, as a state representative, I held a press conference to call on former Governor Rick Snyder and former Attorney General Bill Schuette to take immediate action in initiating the termination clause in the agreement between Enbridge and the State of Michigan. Now, years later, I am pleased to have an Attorney General who will finally act. This 66-year-old pipeline must be decommissioned as soon as possible.”
