LANSING, Mich. (June 16, 2021) — Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) has issued the following statement about legislation that passed the Michigan Senate today and that aims to suppress Michigan voters:

“It is stunning that Senate Republicans claim their legislation would help with election administration when this bill is opposed by the very people who administer elections in the state of Michigan — our dedicated county and municipal clerks.

“Among the methods Republicans are requiring voters to include as proof of identification with their absentee voter application is a photocopy of their ID, their Michigan driver’s license number, Michigan personal ID card number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number. Clerks don’t even have access to most voters’ Social Security numbers, as it’s not required to be in the Qualified Voter File for cross-checking.

“I know the proponents of this bill are fond of security breaches — just look at what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th — and this bill leaves Michigan voters more vulnerable, not less. All it does is feed into the lies about our election integrity, and I voted no.”
