LANSING, Mich. (Aug. 3, 2021) — Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield), Rep. Kyra Bolden (D-Southfield), and Rep. Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer approved a state of emergency declaration Monday for Farmington, Farmington Hills, and Southfield as the cities continue to recover from July storms that repeatedly knocked out power, prompted substantial flooding, and damaged residential and commercial properties:
“We’re immensely grateful to Gov. Whitmer for the emergency declaration in our districts to assist with the recovery process in the aftermath of these severe and disruptive climate events in and around Oakland County over the last several weeks. This declaration will maximize all available state resources to coordinate with our local officials, first responders, and emergency personnel who have been tirelessly helping our residents following the impact of these storms.
“We know our constituents are feeling the fatigue from enduring repeated loss of power and basement flooding this summer. Our neighbors are deserving of a peace of mind that not every rainfall will result in crisis at home. That’s why we’re calling on our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join our sense of urgency to deliver real and lasting infrastructure solutions. The time for action is long overdue.

Following the storm on July 7, the cities of Farmington, Farmington Hills, and Southfield each declared local states of emergency. Monday’s declaration by Gov. Whitmer at the state level will ensure state assistance will be utilized to respond to and recover from the impacts of this emergency, protect public health, safety, and property, and lessen or avert the threat of more severe and lasting harm.
